Elementary school parents keep small things close up after the death of two young students influenza
Prince George County, Maryland (7News) – Parents at some elementary schools are worried about their children after two students died of Prince George County Public Schools (PGCPS) flu.
A school spokesperson said he attended John Bene Elementary School and CMIT North Elementary School.

“That's scary to hear,” said Amber Gray, the mother of the two. “I was hoping that flu season was over, especially since we're in the spring, that's scaring me, but I think we're still in it.”
This is what the PGCPS they are doing to prevent spreading in schools.
- Enhanced cleaning – Increased disinfection of high-touch areas in schools and buses.
- Hand washing and hygiene – Ensures sufficient soap, paper towels and hand sanitizers with reminders for proper hand washing.
- Temporary Masking – If flu cases reach critical levels in schools, temporary masking may be required to protect students and staff.
- On-Sight Influenza Vaccination – We partner with Prince George's County Health Department to provide flu vaccines at affected schools.
- Limiting exposure – Keep students in as consistent groups as possible, limit interactions and reduce occurrence.
- Extracurricular adjustment – Change or postpone high contact activities and large gatherings as needed.
- Continuous Surveillance – Tracking disease trends, working closely with local health authorities, and continuing to update families regularly.
“As soon as they enter, they give them vitamins while they wash 'hands, soap, 30 seconds, ABC song',” Gray said. “I think people should take precautions for their children based on their individual needs.”

Parent Shelcy Thomas said you can never pay too much attention.
“Don't send it to school when you're sick,” Thomas said. “We all need to keep our kids safe even though they're not the COVID-19 outbreak. That's what we all got to keep our kids safe.”

The district said it will hold its first flu vaccine clinic on Wednesday, March 12th. Families living near the Target Clinic will be informed directly of details on how to attend.
