Cincinnati (WKRC) – March is National Kidney Awareness Month and it is time to focus on the importance of kidney health and the risks associated with kidney disease. According to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), one in three people are at risk of kidney disease, often without knowing it. Perry Hall, who had undergone two kidney transplants, shared his experience. “I'm very well. My kidneys are functioning well, and the majority of people who spoke to people who have not had a kidney transplant say I have better functions than their native kidneys,” Hall said.
Dialysis is an important procedure that keeps patients alive until renal donors are available, as it filters blood when the kidneys are unable to. Hall and Jaime Brown both work with NKF to highlight the importance of precautions such as lowering blood pressure and monitoring kidney health through blood tests. These procedures can reduce the likelihood of interventions such as dialysis or transplantation.
Brown, who has lupus, expressed his dedication to raising awareness. “We are very passionate about what we do, especially when we're sick, because knowledge is power, so we're very passionate about raising awareness and spreading education,” Brown said. She has been in remission for the past two years, explaining that she “really exciting and changed my life.”
