Measles were eradicated in the United States 25 years ago, but now the incident has risen nationwide, mainly among unvaccinated individuals.
And when airborne viruses spread, false information also spreads.
Here are some common myths about measles and what you need to know to separate facts from fiction.
FALSE: Vitamin A can prevent measles
Vitamin A is used to prevent complications in patients who already suffer from measles, but it is not a preventive care.
Dr. Glenn Wortman is an infectious disease expert at the Medstar Washington Hospital Center.
“Take vitamin A doesn't prevent you from getting sick from measles,” says Dr. Glenn Wortmann, an infectious disease expert at Medstar Washington Hospital Center. “If you have measles, if you are malnourished and you are lacking in vitamins, it certainly has a role to play, and it has been shown to help… I think a lot of doctors are giving it.

FALSE: MMR vaccines can cause measles
Vaccines are made from live viruses, but are weakened and do not cause disease.
Instead, vaccines encourage the immune system to recognize the virus and develop immunity.
FALSE: You cannot get measles if you get vaccinated

That happens, but as more and more people are not connected to the vaccine, it's likely that it's widespread and higher, and it's very important to keep the vaccine up to date.”
The most common side effect from MMR vaccines is pain at the injection site, and then some children develop a fever.
If you have doubts about whether you have been vaccinated from measles, or if your booster is part of a particular group that requires it, talk to your healthcare provider.
