Wild Deer test is positive for Washtenaw County CWD
Washtenau County, Michigan. – Currently, there are 15 Michigan counties, with chronic wasteful diseases being discovered in wild deer populations.
Adult Buck, who discovered sick behavior in Salem Township, recently tested positive for CWD, making Washtenaw County the 15th Michigan county with CWD.
“The expansion of chronic wasteful disease into Washtenau County is consistent with the slow spread we saw across Michigan,” said Chadfedewa, an expert in DNR Deer, Elk and Moose Management. “This case was identified thanks to residents who saw deer who looked sick but reported it to us. All data helps to support science-based decisions to support Michigan wildlife. We are grateful that Michigan residents are cherishing their deer and continue to engage in this way.”
The Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostics Institute collaborated with the DNR to identify CWDs in wild deer herds in Michigan and confirmed the findings of CWD. The USDA's National Veterinary Services Institute in Ames, Iowa, also confirmed the test results.
CWD is a neurological disorder that affects deer, elk and moose. It causes brain degeneration. It can lead to weakness, abnormal behavior, loss of physical function and ultimately death.
Once an animal has CWD, it will not recover. There is no treatment.
What is Chronic Waste Disease (CWD)?
CWD is caused by a normal protein called a prions and is accidentally folded.
It is transmitted directly from animals through animal-to-animal contact or through contact with saliva, urine, feces, blood, carcass parts, or infected soil.
Prions are highly resistant to the environment and can remain infectious for years.
Symptoms of chronic wasteful disease in deer
CWDs have a long incubation period, usually around 18 months, but symptoms can take up to two years for symptoms to appear.
In most cases, animals with CWD do not have visible symptoms of the disease until the last few months of the disease cycle. This means that most infected animals are virtually impossible to distinguish from healthy, uninfected animals.
Because CWD affects the nervous system of infected animals, they usually die from a predator, vehicle collision, or other disease before CWD is visible.
If an infected animal survives to the final stage of the disease, the most obvious sign is weakness. CWD leads to the gradual loss of physical condition. Other symptoms include excessive alcohol consumption and urination.
Deer have fewer interactions with other animals, due to waste, head drops, blank expressions, and repeated walking in set patterns. In elk, you may see overheating and tension. Excessive salivation, drooling and crushing of teeth are also seen.
Can humans develop chronic wasteful disease?
According to CDCNo cases of CWD infection in people have been reported. However, there may be risks for people when they come into contact with animals infected with CWD, or in contact with or eating meat.
CWD is associated with another prion disease in animals that infect humans. The CDC sees CWD as “theoretical risk to people.”
Studies in monkeys suggest that CWD can be obtained by eating meat and brain tissue from infected deer or elk. These studies raise concerns that CWD can pose a risk to people.
