Two moms share their heartfelt fears while pregnant
Heart problems during pregnancy can be life-threatening, but are often overlooked. Two moms share their experiences and doctors make sure more women survive.
Norfolk, VA – Pregnancy should be a beautiful experience. But for some women, it can be fast and dangerous.
Heart conditions such as pre-skinned and postpartum cardiomyopathy are the major causes of mother death. And often, warning signs are missed.
Local doctors work to ensure that more mothers receive the care they need before it's too late, but the two mothers share their fears to help other women recognize the risks.
Jakwanda Arrington knew something was wrong during her last pregnancy.
“I was suffering from shortness of breath,” she said. “I kept awake and threw it up.”
But Arlington said every time she went to the ER, she got the same answer.
“They kept telling me I had pneumonia,” she said.
After that, her symptoms did not go away even after giving birth. Three weeks later, things went in a horrifying direction when Arrington said he woke up breathlessly due to the air.
“I couldn't hold my breath,” she said. “So I called 911.”
At the hospital, the doctor finally realized what was actually going on.
“They told me I had postpartum cardiomyopathy,” Arrington said. This is a type of heart failure that weakens the myocardium and makes it difficult to properly pump blood. “So if I hadn't gone to the hospital, I wouldn't be here today.”
Christine Bates was afraid of her own heart – this time in the early stages of pregnancy.
“My heart rate has risen so much and I've finished twice on the ER for that,” she said. “[I] I also found my blood pressure to be very high…and very scary. ”
Bates' doctors referred her to Dr. Petra Lynch Sentara-EVMS Cardio-Obstetrics Centershe said she finally got the answers and care she needed.
“Complications in women[s] It's actually an increase during pregnancy,” Dr. Lynch said.
But she highlighted even greater issues. Women, especially women of color, are not always taken seriously when reporting symptoms.
“They were sent home and told me they were worried or they had an upper respiratory tract infection,” Dr. Lynch said. “And those patients will come back and prove that the provider is wrong.”
But she said the good news is that many of these dangerous conditions can be caught early and even prevented. At the Sentara-EVMS Cardio-Obstetrics Center, physicians focus on early detection and often low-risk treatments.
“One simple baby aspirin can prevent bed rest, kidney failure, high blood pressure and stroke. [and] Heart failure,” Dr. Lynch said.
Bates said getting proper care makes all the difference.
“Dr. Lynch had a very kind, encouraging conversation with me,” she said. “I decided… it could be life and death. It doesn't have to be.”
Now, both Bates and Arlington encourage other mothers to pay attention to their bodies and not be afraid to push the answer.
“If you know you didn't have this issue before you became pregnant, try looking at what's wrong,” Arlington said.
“Listen to your doctor,” she said. “It's sometimes difficult, but sometimes it's frustrating. That's probably worth it.”
Dr. Lynch said he would be careful of warning signs of heart problems during and after pregnancy – severe swelling, chest pain, shortness of breath, and more. If you experience any of these symptoms, get immediate medical assistance.
