MADISONS (WKOW) – As spring break approaches, public health Madison & Dane County (PHMDC) officials urge travelers to make sure they are vaccinated against measles.
CDC data shows that over 200 measles have been reported during the outbreak, mainly in Texas and New Mexico. Cases have also been diagnosed in 10 other states and in New York City this year. Most people were not vaccinated or their vaccination status was unknown.
A PHMDC news release said that measles can be highly contagious and can spread quickly through coughing and sneezing. Even if you are close to an infected person, you can spread the virus.
“Unvaccinated travelers are at a higher risk of catching measles and returning it to their community,” said Janelle Heinrich, director of public health Madison & Dane County. “Please check your vaccination records before you go out on vacation.”
According to PHMDC, the two-dose MMR vaccine series is 97% effective in preventing measles. It also protects against mumps and rubella.
95% of vaccinations targeted to prevent community transmission of measles. In Dane County, 95.6% of K-12 students completed their MMR vaccine series in the 2023-2024 academic year. In 2024, 86.5% of 24 months of age were given at least one dose.
The measles vaccine takes about two weeks to provide protection. Those who need to get vaccinated have the following options:

The PHMDC encourages those who travel unvaccinated to monitor their health when they return from their trip. Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, and rashes spreading from the head. If you experience symptoms, stay home and contact your doctor before visiting.
