Influenza season lasts in Indiana despite warm weather
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates at least 33 million cases of influenza nationwide, with 430,000 people hospitalized. So far, 19,000 people have died.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates at least 33 million cases of influenza nationwide, with 430,000 people hospitalized. So far, 19,000 people have died.
“I think (I think) it's more serious than in the past few years. With those numbers… it really tells the story, and I think this year we're talking about serious illnesses, especially with 19,000 deaths,” Dr. Darren Lawrence said. “Covid is declining and people are vaccinated. They don't want to go anymore, so there are fewer vaccines in the community, higher incidence of actual diseases, and more serious.”
Even with the idea that spring weather is upon us and flu season is declining, it's not too late to get vaccinated.
“We usually consider flu shots to be a fall activity, but as we've heard, the flu is still active in most communities and can remain active until April,” said pharmacist Kelly Goode. “Influenza vaccines are not only a safe and effective way to protect the flu, but they also play an important role in reducing the chances of other serious complications. Therefore, if you haven't already got a shot of your flu, you should plan to visit your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible.”
Good said getting vaccinated also helps build a “community of immunity.”
Influenza is particularly dangerous for older people, people with chronic illnesses and children, she said.
“Therefore, it's particularly important to take the flu vaccine if you're over 50, or if you have chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, or obesity,” Goode said.
