Support Group strengthens diabetic patients to manage their condition
Charlotte Vauden/BBCA support group set for over 60 diabetics empowers people to manage their condition, the sick woman said.
Sandra McDermott, 69, diagnosed type 2 diabetes 20 years ago and attended a monthly meeting to “help yourself to get the information I need to help.”
The sessions, hosted by caregivers from the charity Northamptonshire, will be held in Wellingborough and include educational talk, happiness activities such as watercolors and Tai Chi, as well as lunch.
“I've been ignoring diabetes for a long time, so I'm scared of it and I think it's time to take control, so it's really good to be with someone who really understands,” McDermott added.
Diabetes is a condition in which a person's blood sugar levels become too high.
Alexis O'Callaghan, a diabetes expert dietitian at the NHS, shares her healthy diet tips with the group.
She said misinformation could be “problem.”
“I will visit to provide advice, answer questions and most importantly, to let them know that they can still enjoy their food,” she added.
“It's not all fate and darkness. There's so much you can do to manage diabetes.”
Charlotte Vauden/BBCGaynor Roberts, a group facilitator for caregivers in Northamptonshire, is responsible for organizing each session, including those found on the menu.
“We make sure people eat a balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as high-protein and low-sugar foods,” she said.
Food is purchased from various supermarkets to ensure that it is affordable and accessible.
“They have options, but that's a healthy choice, so what we want to do is set an example,” Roberts said.
