Covid-19 boosters are available to people over 65 years of age and immunocompromised

People over the age of 65 and immunocompromised are eligible for the 2024-25 Covid-19 vaccine supplement, health officials said.

The Oregon Department of Health recommends that both groups obtain a second dose.

“Immunity from the vaccine can fade over time, but once you get a second dose, you can regain that protection,” Paul Cielck, medical director of infectious diseases and vaccinations for the OHA's public health department, said in a news release. “That's why people who are encouraging people over the age of 65 or moderately immunocompromised are immune deficient, as if they were talking to health care or vaccine providers about getting a second dose.

Cieslak said the second dose would provide an increase in protection. Officials recommend that you receive the dose six months after receiving the first dose, but it can be given immediately two months after the first dose.

People with immunocompromised do not need to show proof to receive their second dose, the release said.

2024-25 COVID-19 vaccines are first available in Oregon September.

The positive tests have been around 2-3% since November after Covid-19 cases saw spikes in Oregon at the end of the summer, according to OHA data.
