Avian flu: Cat infections related to raw pet food, New York health officials say

new york – The New York City Health Department has deployed several tips for pet parents after two cats from two separate households contracted the avian flu.

One cat infected with the bird flu is an 8-month old kitten on the Upper West Side who consumed raw chicken from Savage Cat, a company that makes raw pet food.

The vet said kittens must be euthanized.

“We had to submit it to Cornell with swabs, admit the kitten to the hospital, continue to carry on all care, including oxygen for 24 hours, continue to deteriorate, and unfortunately put the kitten to sleep the next day.

The health department says pet owners should avoid feeding their loved ones raw food and milk, like furry. If your pet consumes raw food and starts to show signs of illness, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

According to the department, cats should be kept indoors. And when walking your dog, it is best to avoid dead or sick animals.

Meanwhile, Savage Cat issued a warning to its client in February after a Colorado cat got sick with H5N1.

The company was notified to the sick cat at the end of January. The cat has since recovered.

Savage Cat informed clients about the correlation between raw cat food and bird flu. A preliminary test of raw cat food was tested and replied “not negative.”

Further quarantine testing is needed, and authorities are still awaiting these results. The company said it is working with the FDA to gather information.

Health experts advise New Yorkers not to feed their pets raw food or milk. They also provide pet owners to prevent cats from roaming outside where they may come into contact with wild birds and other animals.

Signs to watch out for cats include cloudy or lethargic eyes, coughing, sneezing, or difficulty breathing.

Current risks for New Yorkers with avian flu remain low.

“The avian influenza virus poses a wide range of risks to the public only if the virus develops its ability to transmit among people we have never seen,” said Dr. Michelle Morse, representative of the New York City Health Department.
