Someone who warns when watching 25-year spikes in the case of measles

Europe saw the most measles incidents in 25 years in 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned.
Across the region, including 53 countries in Europe and Central Asia, there were 127,350 cases of measles reported last year, twice as many as seen in 2023.
The rise has been linked to lower vaccination rates in many countries during Covid-19, and this has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels, officials said.
Analyses by WHO and UNICEF reported 38 deaths, with 40% of cases in children under the age of 5.
International concerns are growing about the growing threat of measles.
In the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported three outbreaks, including West Texas and New Mexico, with more than 250 infected and child deaths.
Measles spread in the UK last year, but initially focused on the West Midlands, there were small clusters across the country, sparking a vaccination catch-up campaign.
A national incident was called in January last year. And then there were 2,911 confirmed cases in the UK in 2024. This was the highest number of cases since 2012.
The latest figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) have confirmed 151 measles cases so far this year, of which 60 indicate 60 in the past month.
Yorkshire and Humber, Southwest and London are the regions with the highest numbers ever in 2025.
Over 180,000 additional MMR vaccines were delivered in last year's catch-up campaign 13% of previously unvaccinated children under the age of 5 take their first dose.
Ukhsa also said the biggest increase in MMR for both doses was seen in groups with historically low coverage, including African, Arab and other ethnic groups of black and white gypsies and Irish travelers.
The European Regional Director said: Without a high vaccination rate, there is no health safety.
“As we shape new regional health strategies for Europe and Central Asia, we cannot afford to lose the ground. Every country must step up its efforts to reach unvaccinated communities.
“The measles virus never rests, and we can't.”
In 2023 alone, 500,000 children in the WHO Europe region missed the first dose of the measles vaccine.
The report notes that less than 80% of eligible children in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Romania were vaccinated against measles in 2023.
In the UK, the figure is 89.8%, but drops to 85% due to the second dose uptake.
“The measles incidents are on the rise across the UK,” said Dr Ben Kasstan Dubsch, assistant professor of global health development at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
“Measles is very infectious. Before the daily vaccinations began, England and Wales saw a major outbreak at a peak of 600,000 in a few years.
“Vaccination programs in the UK and around the world are so successful it's easy to forget why we still need them, and many people may not have a memory of the outcome of infections like measles.”
He added that public health teams must always be involved with families and communities through outreach, which can be challenging when resources are increasingly stretched.
“But the cost of reducing public health outreach speaks for itself. History shows that even a small reduction in vaccine intake can have catastrophic consequences.”
