Houston Methodists warn of the risk of measles exposure

HOUSTON – The Houston Methodist is warning patients about possible measles exposure at one of the locations.
The alert follows a recent confirmation of Houston's third measles incident this year. This says health officials involve unvaccinated infants.
“So there's nothing here in Houston now. But recently the child has recovered at home and no longer has anyone else infected.”
Dr. Perce said the infant was exposed to illness while traveling internationally with his family. Due to the age of the children, they were too young to be vaccinated.
“We had two cases in December and January again in connection with international travel, and it didn't spread beyond those two cases,” he said.
Dr. Perse praised both the children's parents and the health care provider for their prompt action in seeking medical care.
A Methodist Hospital spokesman said it all started with the Houston Health Department notifying them that a patient who visited any of the facilities tested positive and urged people from the abundant attention to be immediately alerted to those who may have been exposed.
The following message was sent to the patient:
“The Houston Health Department has confirmed cases of measles. As soon as they are notified, they warned all potentially exposed people from the abundant attention. Those who have received the MMR vaccine are immune. For those who are unsure about the vaccination status, we encourage those patients to reach out to their primary care physicians.”
The hospital has not made clear whether the location and whether the patient involved is an infant, but you can feel at ease if you are not notified of what you are clear.
Regarding babies who have recently become ill, Dr. Perse said that parents didn't know that their infant had measles. He outlined some important symptoms to be aware of.
“Measles generally starts with high fever, body pain, redness and tearing of the eyes, and by the fourth day, a rash appears,” he explained. “The rash usually starts on the face and then spreads to the rest of the body.”
If you suspect your child has measles, Dr. Persse urges parents to call the doctor's office in advance before visiting, so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
“This helps minimize the risk of exposing others when they are not vaccinated,” he said.
