How sex differences affect the effectiveness of chronic pain
In a recent interview with Modern ob/gynDr. Tuan Tran of the University of Calgary highlighted the historical biases of preclinical chronic pain research.
Tran said researchers have not historically evaluated the biological differences between men and women regarding chronic pain. This surveillance has brought two major issues. The first was an incomplete understanding of the fundamental causes of chronic pain in both sexes, and the second was the development of treatment strategies based primarily on male biology. As a result, many pain management approaches were less effective for female patients, leading to significant disparities in treatment outcomes.
One of the main consequences of this research bias is that female patients, which account for approximately 70% of individuals suffering from chronic pain, often fail to respond to specific treatments in the same way as male patients. Many pain management therapies were designed without taking into account the unique neurobiological mechanisms present in women, leading to more effective treatment options for women. However, recent advances in research have shed light on the fact that men and women may experience chronic pain differently due to biological and fundamental differences in the mechanisms of pain.
Tran emphasized the importance of this change in this study. Recognizing gender-based differences in pain mechanisms is an important step to enable a more comprehensive understanding of chronic pain. This recognition also opened up the development of biomarkers that will help in the creation of new drug discovery possibilities, identifying new treatment goals, and creating more effective and personalized therapies.
Trang also acknowledged that both research and clinical fields are making advances in addressing these disparities. Increased awareness of gender differences in chronic pain leads to a more comprehensive approach in scientific research, and ultimately improves treatment options for both men and women.
