Ohio confirms that the first measles case of 2025 is a resident of Ashtabra County
According to ODH, the infected adult is from Ashtabra County. The first case of measles in Ohio in 2025 occurred amid an ongoing outbreak in Texas and New Mexico.
COLOMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) reports the state's first measles incident in 2025.
According to ODH, the infected adult is from a native Ashtabra County. The person was not vaccinated. “I recently got into contact with someone who traveled internationally.”
“The fact that we have a measles case in Ohio focuses on the importance of being fully vaccinated,” ODH director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said in the release. “The disease can be very serious, but it is preventable. I highly recommend getting vaccinated and protecting yourself and your child.”
State health officials now say they will work with the Ashtabula County Health Department to “follow up potential exposures and promote vaccination opportunities.”
“Measles can be very contagious and can spread to others through coughing and sneezing. Traveling individuals can take it back to the US and Ohio. If they are not protected from illness, nine out of 10 exposed people will be ill,” ODH explained in Release.
The first case of measles in Ohio in 2025 occurred amid an ongoing outbreak in Texas and New Mexico. In comparison, last year, one in 2023 and 90 in 2022 spurred the outbreak in central Ohio.
During the briefing earlier this week, ODH officials have announced that vaccination rates in state schools have fallen to 85.4% for the 2024-25 academic year, down from 86.2% last year, well below the national average of 92.7%.
Medical experts emphasize that two-dose regimens for measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines (MMR) (administered between 12 and 15 months and between 4 and 6 years old) are 97% effective against measles.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all children receive two MMR vaccines. The MMR vaccine can also be administered to adults born after 1957, when vaccination status is unknown.
