Early Measles Vaccines Recommended for Some Infants: Windsor-Essex Health Unit
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit currently recommends assessing some young children if they receive a measles vaccine dose earlier than expected, depending on elevated cases in the region.
Dr. Medi Arosh, a medical officer in community health, published an update on Thursday. This encourages local healthcare providers to conduct a personalized risk assessment for patients between 6 and 12 months who have not yet received the first measles, mumps, or Levela (MMR) vaccine.
“Based on the level of individual risk assessed through the patient's likelihood of travel to areas where measles is circulating or other areas with high-risk activity, providers should consider administering MMR earlier than planned,” the Health Unit said in a statement.
According to the Health Unit, early dosages will be added to two doses that are recommended to receive the child after 12 to 18 months.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory infection when you have a disease cough, sneezing, or someone who has a discussion.

The Windsor-Essex Health Unit reported 17 cases of measles in the area in March and two cases of measles in February.
According to data from Public Health Ontario, the Chatham-Kent Health Unit has been carrying 20 viruses since the Ontario measles outbreak began in late October.
Parents and caregivers should contact their child's healthcare provider for details on early vaccination.
Cases in Ontario are on the rise, but according to Ontario Public Health: There have been 470 cases across the province, with 120 cases increasing since March 14th.
Almost half of these incidents are located in nearby Elgin and Oxford counties and St. Thomas, all subject to southwestern public health. The health unit reports 228 cases, primarily in unvaccinated children. This is most of the health units in Ontario.
Dr. Ning Trang uncovered the misinformation in the community that catching measles leads to complete immunity.
