Two more cases of measles have been confirmed in Maryland, with two Prince George County residents traveling internationally together recently.

Two more measles have been identified in Maryland in two Prince George County residents who recently traveled internationally together.

Maryland and Virginia Health Departments and Prince George's county health officials confirmed the incident Thursday.

Health officials say people who visited the following locations at these times may have been exposed:

Dulles International Airport: Transport to Concourse A, International Arrival Building (IAB) (Bag request area from 8am to 12pm on March 5th)

  • March 5th, 7:30pm to March 6th, 4:30am
  • March 13th, 4:15am to 10am
  • March 15th, 7:45am to 3pm
  • March 17th, 2:30pm to 7pm

These are the second and third confirmed cases of measles in Maryland. Howard County Resident A person who traveled internationally through Dulles tested positive earlier this month.

In a statement Thursday, Prince George County Public Schools Principal Millard House II confirmed that a positive measles incident has been discovered at John Hanson Montessor Risk School in Forest Heights. It was not clear whether the incident was found on a student or a member of the school's teachers.

“As a precaution, unvaccinated students or staff at schools with confirmed cases will be excluded from face-to-face learning or work 21 days after the last confirmed case,” House wrote.

Dr. Lucia Donatelli said the incubation period for positive measles cases ranges from 7 to 21 days after exposure.

“We are constantly monitoring measles, even when no outbreak is known,” she said at a press conference Thursday night.

Measles have appeared across the country in large numbers, particularly violently attacked in rural West Texas, reaching 279 confirmed cases on Tuesday.

“I can't say we're not worried about an outbreak in Texas at 100%, but so far our case hasn't been linked to that outbreak, so hopefully it continues to go that way,” Donatelli said.

Virginia has not reported any measles cases so far this year, officials said in a statement.

Health officials say measles is highly contagious and can spread into the air through breathing, coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include fever of 101 degrees or higher, runny nose, cough, watery eyes, and rashes on the face and body. Symptoms can appear 7-14 days after exposure.

Home to the John Hanson Montessori family, Principal Courtney M. King said that if a parent or child experiences symptoms of measles, the school nurse and their primary health care provider will be notified.

Anyone who believes they are exposed should be isolated at home and contacted a health care provider.
