Sedgwick County hosts measles vaccination clinics amid the outbreak
Wichita, Kansas (KWCH) – Sedgwick County has given people the opportunity to get no cost Also known as the measles vaccine or MMR vaccineat the clinic on Saturday.
It was located at West Central Clinic for people over 12 months.
A director of the Sedgwick County Health Department said one dose of the vaccine provides 93% protection against the virus, with a second dose giving 97%.
Adrienne Byrne recommends that those born before 1957 are considered immunity, and those born between 1957 and 1967 take another vaccine, as the first vaccine is not as effective.
Byrne said on Saturday they saw more adults coming out.
According to the health department, one in five people who get measles will be hospitalized. This disease is very contagious.
“Measles is very infectious, not like the flu where droplets come out and fall,” Byrne said. “It's based on what we touch. If you have measles and you've been sitting in this chair in this room, you'll need to contact us for the people who were here at the time.”
While there Known measles cases in southwestern Kansas (Stevens, Morton and Grant counties) currently have no known cases in Sedgwick counties.
The health department said it plans to hold more measles vaccine clinics soon, but no dates have been announced.
