Can you get rabies by drinking milk? What experts say after a woman dies from infection
What is rabies?
Rabies is a vaccine-protectable animal bone disease and viral disease that can be transmitted from mammals to humans, and affects the central nervous system. It infects mammals such as dogs, cats, livestock and wildlife.
Can you get rabies from milk?
Milk from rabies animals, such as cows and buffalo, contains the rabies virus, according to an ICAR report. There is a risk of consuming such milk without boiling. The report categorizes “people drinking milk” as Category 1 based on their risk of illness.
Other instances falling into this category include being licked by an infectious animal, licked by an intact mucosa (mouth, nose, anal, genitals, and conjunctiva) and being bitten without blood.
The report states, “The classification of patients according to the nature of the bite is very important. The decision to treat, post-bite AR vaccination, and administration of immunoglobulin is determined based on classification. Depending on the severity, patients are divided into three categories.
“The rabies virus infects the brain. When the rabies virus reaches the brain, symptoms begin to appear, at this stage the infection is virtually untreated and usually dies as a result of death,” he added.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been previous reports of exposure to potentially heavy rabies from drinking unpasteurized milk.
However, a report from the National Centers for Disease Control states that “there are no lab or epidemiological evidence that rabies is transmitted through milk and dairy consumption. Therefore, PEP is not required to consume milk and dairy products from animals infected with rabies.”
The rabies virus can be transmitted via unpasteurized milk, the CDC said, adding that “the risk can be better defined when milk and breast tissue samples are collected from ferocious livestock and assayed for the presence, survival and infection of the rabies virus.”
Regardless of the extent to which active virus is spreading to cow's milk, if all dairy products are pasteurized prior to consumption, the potential risk of rabies transmission through this route can be eliminated.

A recent case of rabies transmission was reported by Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh when a woman died after contracting the disease via milk.
Reports say the cow contracted rabies after being bitten by a stray dog. She and her family were not aware that the cow was infected. Even after the animal began to show symptoms, the family led them to get vaccinated, but the woman did not seek medical attention.
She then experienced severe rabies-like symptoms, including extreme fear of water. The woman soon experienced panic attacks and began to show an aggressive response to light and water. Her family rushed her to several hospitals, but she was constantly turning her back.
The district hospital reportedly advised them to bring her back home. The woman passed away shortly thereafter.
