The first British H5N1 avian influenza case in sheep has been confirmed in Yorkshire as officials step up efforts to avoid outbreaks of diseases seen in U.S. livestock.
The infection was identified after “daily monitoring of livestock co-hosted on sites where avian influenza has been confirmed with prisoners of war,” the Environment Department said Monday.
British officials took risks to livestock and people, but authorities and scientists have I urged attention to avoid the widespread recurrence of infection found in poultry and cattle in the United States.
“Strict biosecurity measures are being implemented to prevent further spread of the disease,” said Christine Middlemis, UK veterinary director.
“While the risk to livestock remains low, we encourage all animal owners to ensure that they have sophisticated cleanliness and to immediately report any signs of infection to the animal and plant health agency,” she added.
The outbreak of avian flu in the US leads to chickens' ulls, and fears that at one point the virus will mix genetic material with another pathogen, making it more contagious among humans. Dozens of cases have been reported in people in the US, including the January fatality.
The UK lawsuit has added to evidence that mammals may be infected with avian flu, said Meera Chand, the UK Health Security Agency's lead in emerging infectious diseases.
“However, current evidence suggests that the circulating worldwide of the bird flu virus we see in birds is not easily spread to people, and the risk of avian flu to the general public remains very low,” Chand added.
