Rep. Rick Hansen – Release: After detecting bid flu in Stearns County dairy products, Rep. Hansen calls for increased protection measures
St. Paul, Minnesota – Today, the Minnesota Animal Health Committee detection H5N1 bird flu from the Stearns County dairy flock as part of Minnesota's milk surveillance plan. The BAH isolated the herd until it met testing requirements indicating that it was no longer infected.
In response, Rep. Rick Hansen (DFL – South St. Paul), DFL co-chair of the House Agriculture and Finance and Policy Committee, is calling for additional safeguards to address H5N1, including voluntary testing of retail milk, poultry and dairy workers, and monitoring the supply of virus waste.
“The potential disaster of the larger Minnesota avian flu outbreak calls for a 'trust-verified' approach. BAH points out that pasteurized milk kills bacteria and viruses, but it does require further testing and monitoring, let alone people who handle potentially affected Paultry herds and dairy herds. “While the unpredictability of federal funding to monitor and address threats like avian flu poses a major challenge, Minnesotan deserves an additional, aggressive step to protecting workers and ensuring confidence in food supplies.”
