How pharmacists can use GLP-1 to support patients in compliance
In the US, CDC data shows that over 40% of adults are obese and 9.7% are severely obese.1 Obesity, a chronic disease, increases the risk of several disease states, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes (T2D), coronary heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, originally approved for treating T2D, are increasingly popular as they show significant efficacy in the treatment of overweight and obesity. According to a poll from KFF, one in five patients said they took GLP-1 to lose weight.2 However, side effects of GLP-1 can include gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and vomiting.
In a recent interview, Drug Topics® sat down at Lydia Newsom, clinical associate professor of pharmacy at Mercer University Pharmacy, Lydia Newsom at Pharmador, Pharmador, discussing how pharmacists can help patients maintain compliance with GLP-1 therapy, and how they can work with physicians, nutritionists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize outcomes for patients with GLP-1 therapy.
“I think a lot of these patients may be interrupted. [GLP-1s] For [side effects] And we've seen it in clinical research. “Education is one of my most important works.”
“In addition to injection techniques, compliance and costs, there are some specific things that pharmacists actually think are high value. [they] Communicate with patients about those things,” she added.
