Case of Measles Confirmed in DC AMTRAK – Exposure to NBC4 Washington
A measles person travelled to DC last week by train, health officials warned Tuesday.
The person diagnosed traveled several locations in DC during the contagious period, including Amtrak trains, officials said.
They warned of potential exposures at these locations and times.
- Amtrak North East Regional 175 Southbound trains on March 19th from 7:30pm to 1:30am
- Amtrack Concourse, Union Station, 50 Massachusetts Avenue NE, DC, March 19th 11pm to 3:30am.
- MedStar Urgent Care Adams Morgan, 1805 Columbia Road NW, DC, March 22nd, 7-11pm
It was not immediately clear whether the DC measles patients traveled internationally or were vaccinated.
Last month, Texas health officials announced that an unvaccinated child died of measles, marking the first death of U.S. measles in 10 years.
In all of 2024, there were 285 measles cases in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say. Of these, 89% of patients were not vaccinated.
In recent weeks in the DC area, I have seen two measles cases in Prince George and Howard counties. Health officials said these patients traveled internationally.
Healthcare professionals are tracking the potential spread of highly contagious diseases, said Dr. Glenn Wortman, director of infectious diseases at Medstar Washington Hospital Center.
“It's spreading in the community much more widely than we've seen in the past, and the way to stop it is to maintain your vaccination rate,” he said.
If you think you have measles, call your clinic or hospital before it appears so you can prepare. They will put your mask on you and take you to a private room to prevent unvaccinated people from coming into contact with you.
Wortman said measles is rare, but most hospitals have the equipment to deal with it. They have what is called a negative pressure chamber to trap infected air inside.
What the DC Ministry of Health says about possible exposure
In a press release, health officials asked residents to report suspected cases and contact the health department immediately to arrange public health testing.
“If you've never received measles containing vaccines (measles, mumps, or rubella) [MMR] (vaccines available in other countries or measles only) may be at risk of developing measles.
Anyone who has been exposed and is at risk of developing measles should monitor symptoms from 21 days after the date of their last exposure.
If you notice symptoms of measles, immediately stay home and separate yourself from others.
Contact your healthcare provider immediately. Call ahead before you go to the provider's office or emergency room to notify you that you may have been exposed to measles and ask that you call the health department to protect other patients and staff.“
