Local ENTs share treatment tips
Lafayette Parish – When allergy seasons are fully infused, many residents feel the effects of seasonal allergens, such as tree and grass pollen.
Dr. Bradley Chastant (a board certified ear, nose and throat (ENT) expert with almost 40 years of experience) often plays the biggest allergic symptoms during spring and fall, when changes in weather lead to a surge in environmental triggers.
“One of the reasons why patients struggle more during allergy season is cold weather. When trees and grasses bloom at greater intensity, allergens are released, and that's what we're seeing this year,” Chastant said.
Chastants, who practice at the Acadiana Allergy Center in Lafayette, report that around 80% of patients schedule visits during these peak allergies.
According to Chastant, the most common complaints include sinuses and nose congestion.
“What we're looking at is the sinus and nasal issues and it's your first filter, so we're picking up all these things, so why we meet those patients,” he explained.
Over-the-counter medications such as antihistamines and nasal sprays are sufficient to manage symptoms for some patients. However, the situation can be more complicated for others and may require more intensive treatment.
Chastant highlighted several ways to manage allergic symptoms, from basic avoidance techniques to more specialized treatments. The breakdown of standard options is as follows::
- Avoid: The first step in managing allergies is to minimize exposure to the trigger. This means staying indoors during peak pollen, using an air purifier at home, and keeping the windows closed to prevent pollen from entering. “Identifying the problem, identifying where you're having the problem, and avoiding it, it's like venom Ivy,” Chastant explained.
- Steroid treatment: For those who need more than over-the-counter drugs, topical steroids like furonase can provide great relief. “Fronase is a nasal steroid and is a powerful treatment, but it works locally systemically. - Allergy shot: Chastant recommends allergy shots for more severe or persistent allergies. He points out that allergy shots are particularly effective in treating patients with simultaneous conditions such as eczema and acid reflux. “You're in the shot, but that eczema is much more controllable. Over the past 22 years, I personally took allergy shots.”
