When to screen for colorectal cancer?

March is the month of colorectal cancer awareness, and the good news is that the number of lives lost to the disease has dropped significantly here in Utah.
Data shows that more people are being screened – allowing disease detection and life-saving in the early stages.
“The reason being screened for colorectal cancer is important because it is a cancer that is symptomatic until it has advanced so much,” said Dr. Mike Woodruff, executive medical director at Regens Blue Cross Blue Shield in Utah.
Woodruff said that once symptoms appear, cancer treatment is much more difficult. Therefore, early detection through screening can save lives.
In recent years, numbers have been declining in Utah, a national decline for people aged 55 to 84, but for younger adults, numbers have increased, and colon cancer remains the second cause of cancer-related deaths.
Woodruff said, “Many people think this will never happen to me. I have no family history and I am young.”
But it couldn't be far from the truth. In fact, Woodruff said one in 24 people is at risk.
“And the prices are rising for people in their 30s and 40s, so I recommend that they be shown at age 45.”
And if you are at higher risk, that initial screening should be even younger.
The good news is that most people will be average or low risk, which means that most people can do stool-based testing. This means you don't need to have a colonoscopy. Talk to your doctor to find the best option for you.
“Utah knows it's very important and catching this cancer early on is life-saving,” Woodruff said.
That's why the Utah Health Collaboration has begun. In particular, an initiative called “VH” has been launched.
Woodruff said, “The key here is to talk to your doctor and follow their recommendations on when to screen.”
He also recommends maintaining a healthy weight, stop smoking or reduce smoking, enriching vegetables, fruits and whole grains, and avoiding processed foods. Exercising regularly is also a great way to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer.
