Hunter New England's local health district is advised to pay attention to signs and symptoms of measles after being notified of three cases of infection while visiting several locations in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie area.
One of the cases that have not been vaccinated has recently returned from Vietnam. There is a continuous, large outbreak of measles. The cases are known to each other.

Dr. David Dulyim, director of the local health district of New England, said that anyone visiting the above location at the time should monitor symptoms.
“Measles is a vaccine-preventable disease that spreads into the air by people with infectious coughs or sneezing,” Dr. Durim said.
“Symptoms to watch out for include fever, runny nose, eye pain and cough. Usually after 3-4 days, a red spotted rash spreads from the head to the rest of the body.
“It is important for people who visit these locations to look for symptoms three weeks after the date listed, as it can take up to 21 days for symptoms to appear after exposure.
“If they develop symptoms, they should call the GP or emergency department in advance to avoid spending time in the waiting room with other patients.
“We want to remind our community to make sure our community is up to date with vaccinations. Measles vaccines can prevent illness even after exposure if given early enough.
“Everyone born after 1965 should make sure they have given two doses of the measles vaccine, which is especially important before traveling abroad, as measles outbreaks are occurring in some parts of the world today.”
Measles – Mumpsulvera (MMR) vaccine is safe and effective and is given free of charge to children aged 12 and 18 months. Also, in NSW, people born after 1965 still don't have two doses.
Children under 12 months of age can get their first dose of MMR up to six months earlier if they are traveling abroad. Parents must refer to the GP.
Because additional dosages are safe, I'm not sure if there are two doses or not, you'll need to take the vaccine. This is especially important before your trip. MMR vaccines are available from GPS (all ages) and from pharmacies (people over 5 years old).
