Childhood vaccinations in the US have not recovered from pandemic slump, Research Show

A new study shows that childhood vaccinations have not recovered from the slump that occurred after the pandemic.

This comes when the US deals with one of The biggest measles has occurred in the last 10 yearsand many of them have been accused of not vaccinating their children

As Measles cases continue to rise in Texas and New Mexicoconcerns are growing about vaccine hesitation.

“Unfortunately, post-pandemic rates of childhood vaccinations have not bounced back,” said Dr. Celine Gounder, medical contributor to CBS News.

Measles is one of the highly contagious diseases that can be prevented with vaccines. Overall, vaccinations for children have declined during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now, a new study in “pediatrics” shows that vaccination rates for some diseases remain lower than pre-pandemic levels.

“What we saw in this study was that around 400,000 babies saw vaccination rates by five months, and fell from about 88% coverage over the course of the pandemic to 81% coverage by 2023,” Gounder said. “And by the time they were 12 months old, these kids hadn't caught up yet.”

This study focused on rotavirus vaccines, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, or hooping cough vaccines, and pneumococcal conjugated vaccines.

“We are particularly concerned about certain groups that are lagging behind, including babies of color, low-income people, Medicaid, and families who may not speak English as their primary language,” Gounder said. “This is a problem because even small dips with vaccination rates can make communities more likely.”

There were a few recently Measles Cases in Philadelphia, Children's Hospital. A baby under 1 year old had two infections – too young to get vaccinated, but traveled internationally.

Cough infections are on the rise in local areas. Doctors say it's because people's vaccine protections can wear out and boosters are recommended for many.

CDC data shows that the US confirmed at least 12 deaths from whoop coughs last year. This is the highest number of deaths from bacterial infections since 2017.
