RFK Jr. significantly reduces federal health programs including CDC, FDA
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced plans to cut the Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday, cutting nearly a quarter of the workforce in a massive restructuring that combines several sectors.
The cuts will save $1.8 billion a year, reducing employee workforce from 82,000 to 62,000 full-time employees, according to the Department of Health. The agency said, in conjunction with previous layoffs, the layoffs would lower the department to around 62,000 workers.
Under the reorganization plan, the number of departments in the health department will decrease from 28 divisions to 15. The number of local offices will decrease from 10 to 5.
“We're not just reducing bureaucratic sprawl,” Kennedy said in a statement. “We are re-aligning our organization with our core mission and new priorities in reverse the chronic disease epidemic. This department will do more at a lower cost for taxpayers.”
