Michigan residents die of rabies after receiving an organ transplant in Ohio: Officials
The Michigan resident died of rabies after apparently receiving an organ transplant, health officials said.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) told ABC News that the patient had an organ transplant at Ohio Hospital in December 2024.
The resident passed away in January 2025 and “public health investigations determined he had contracted rabies through the transplanted organ,” MDHHS said.
According to the MDHHS, the organ donor was not a resident of Michigan or Ohio. The department said it did not provide additional information about residents or donors.
MDHHS said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Rabies Institute had confirmed rabies.
The department added that there is no threat to the public at present, and that those exposed to Michigan patients, including healthcare providers, are being rated as potential exposure to rabies. Post-exposure preventive care was given if it was deemed necessary.
Toledo Medical Center (UTMC) in Toledo, Ohio has issued a statement confirming that the person who died in the hospital is a patient.
“A patient in care at the University of Toledo Medical Center died of rabies in January 2025,” the statement read. “The patient underwent a donor organ transplant, who died at UTMC in late 2024. While rabies' person-to-person transmission is very rare, it has been documented in a very small number of cases, including organ transplants.”
“Utoledo Health is committed to the safety and well-being of all patients,” the statement continued. “The Health System has worked closely with public health authorities and conducted a thorough review of the incident. The incident has found that all best practices and standard safety protocols are properly followed. We respect the privacy of patients and their families and will not share any additional details at this time.”
Rabies is almost always a fatal viral disease if you are not receiving medical care before symptoms begin, according to the CDC.
The federal health agency said it spreads primarily to people and pets through bites and wounds of infected animals.
Anyone who has been bitten or injured but is unsure whether they have been exposed to rabies should immediately consult their healthcare provider. Post-exposure prophylaxis of rabies in unvaccinated individuals includes wound washing, administration of human rabies immunoglobulin – drugs containing antibodies to the rabies virus – and a four-dose rabies vaccine.
According to the CDC, this treatment is extremely effective when administered as soon as possible after exposure.
Once a person begins to develop symptoms of rabies, it means that the disease has progressed to almost 100% fatal points, including fever, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, confusion, hallucinations.
Less than 20 people have survived after “clinical rabies” was recorded, according to the CDC.
According to the CDC, around 60,000 people are receiving medical care following rabies exposure each year, but fewer than 10 people die each year. This is primarily due to rabies prevention efforts in the United States, including vaccinating pets.
