Children in West Texas treated for vitamin A toxicity as healthcare spreads with the outbreak of measles
Medical disinformation related to the outbreak of measles in West Texas has caused new problems. Children are being treated for toxic levels of vitamin A.
Covenant Children's Hospital in Lubbock has confirmed that it is treating children with severe cases of measles, who also suffer from vitamin A toxicity. They have found fewer than 10 pediatric patients who were initially hospitalized due to measles complications but have increased levels of vitamin A, resulting in abnormal liver function.
Health and Human Services Director Robert F. Kennedy Jr. directed the CDC to update its measles guidance to promote vitamin A use among skeptics.
In a March 4 interview with Fox News, Kennedy suggested that treatments, such as the use of cod liver oil containing vitamins A and D, are “working” in treating measles patients.
There have been reports from the West Texas region that cod liver oil is in high demand and is a big seller at local pharmacies.
However, hospitals have notified the public that they will reduce their consumption of vitamin A, warning that excessive amounts of it can have serious adverse effects.
There is no evidence that taking vitamin A prevents measles.
The World Health Organization has administered vitamin A in Africa to reduce mortality during measles outbreaks. This is a strategy in some of the world where widespread malnutrition and vitamin A deficiency damage the immune system. However, malnutrition is not an issue in West Texas or elsewhere where measles outbreaks are becoming widespread in the United States.
More than 320 people in Texas have signed measles in recent weeks. Forty people have been hospitalized in the state and one child has died in the current outbreak.
