Cases of Weissles outbreak grow to six as health officials do “sturdy” contact tracing

The outbreak of measles in Western Australia continues to worsen, with six cases currently confirmed.

These include the returned international travelers and three prisoners. Two are from Hakea Prison in Perth, and one from Bunbury Regional Prison.

That's the same number of cases recorded throughout last year.

Five cases are linked to the current outbreak, and authorities have not yet determined the source of the disease.

Paul Armstrong's medical director said an “intense outbreak investigation” began as authorities tried to identify locations of exposures in the state.

He said the department has launched mass vaccination programs in both prisons.

To date, more than 40 exposure locations have been identified, many of which have been in the Basselton and Bunbury regions of the southwestern part of the state.

A fresh measles warning was also issued by Victorian authorities on Friday.

The person has recently returned from Southeast Asia, where measles is progressing in several countries, including Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.

In Washington, two of the infected prisoners remained in hospitals, with a third being discharged.

“Measles can get very serious illnesses, which is why we are so worried about it,” Dr. Armstrong said.

Vaccination rates will decline

He said the decline in the state's vaccination rates was the source of concern.

“Since the pandemic, there has been some degree of vaccine hesitation, and that's slightly reflected [vaccination] There is a lower rate among children,” he said.

“We know there are a lot of adults who have been vaccinated or not being vaccinated because of measles. They are the ones we are most concerned about.”

Dr. Armstrong said that although there were no measles-related fatalities in recent memories, the outbreak in the US caused the deaths of many people.

He said the risk of infection among travelers to Southeast Asia, where vaccination rates are not as high as Australia, has increased.

The last outbreak of measles in Washington was in 2019, when 26 patients became ill.
