A team analysis involving 902 participants found that levels of this tau fragment were elevated in people with symptoms of Alzheimer's disease who suffer from mild cognitive impairment, with higher symptoms of dementia. Levels were not raised in people with cognitive impairment due to other conditions.

But she said, it wasn't a foolproof blood test for Alzheimer's disease.

The study, led by US scientists, includes 3,397 samples from the US, Sweden and Finland, examining the levels of two proteins (YWHAG and NPTX2) that are usually found at junctions or synapses between neurons in the brain.
The team discovered the YWHAG ratio. NPTX2 can better show that people are experiencing cognitive problems than levels of amyloid beta and tau, and can be used to predict future development of cognitive decline and dementia.
Professor Tony Wyss-Coray, a co-author of the Stanford University study, said the results help to design better clinical trials by identifying the best medication for individuals and selecting the right participants.
