Research reveals that nitrate supplementation may help breathe lung clearance in elderly ANI
Washington DC [USA], August 17 (ANI): A new study shows that nitrate improves the function of the diaphragm (muscles involved in coughing and breathing) by improving strength. Studies have been conducted in old mice and, when replicated in humans, can provide strategies for older people to more effectively clean their lungs and avoid infections.

Previous studies have shown that nitrates help muscles by improving their use of calcium. Researchers fed sodium nitrate to aged mice in drinking water daily for 14 days. Water was regularly given to the control group. Diaphragm muscle contractile function cannot be evaluated directly in living animals or humans. Therefore, they tested the diaphragmatic function of muscle tissue under controlled conditions of muscle stimulation and oxygenation.
The main limitation is that the mouse and human diaphragms have different proportions of fast and slow myocytes. The mouse diaphragm is composed of 90% fast muscle cells. The human diaphragm is made up of 25-50% fast muscle cells, depending on several factors such as age and gender.
Dietary nitrate appears to have a greater impact on the contractile function of fast muscle cells. Therefore, the benefits to the human diaphragm may not be as pronounced as observed in mice. They also tested only male mice, and the benefits for females are unknown.
