Jazzfest crowds raise measles concerns as doctors encourage vaccinations
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) — As the fairgrounds fill up with visitors to this year's Jazz and Heritage Festival, doctors are reminding Louisiana that an influx of travelers can bring more than music and delicious food.
“We love people coming. We have a great culture that we want to share with people,” said Dr. Katherine Baumgarten, medical director of infection prevention at Ochsner Health System.
Baumgarten warns that travelers from other states and countries, particularly those where measles has already occurred, could bring the virus into the area without their knowledge.
“That's why it's important that anyone can do what everyone can,” she said.
As of this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed cases of measles nationwide, with 624 of them found in Louisiana's neighbor, Texas.
“We have over 600 measles next to Texas,” said Dr. Mark Klein, chief medical officer at Manning Family Children's Hospital in New Orleans. “It's naive to think that here in Louisiana, we won't start seeing some pediatric cases here.”
Klein says that unvaccinated children and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable, and he hopes Louisiana cases will rise in the near future.
“We'll see kids with measles here in Louisiana because we know what it is,” Klein said. “We must prepare to take care of them in the best possible way.”
Both the Ochsner Health System and the Manning Family Children's Hospital have begun retraining medical staff to identify and respond to potential measles cases.

Earlier this week, the Louisiana Department of Health confirmed it The state's first measles incident of the year. There were three confirmed cases in 2024. All involves unvaccinated individuals who have recently traveled.
