US COVID-19 deaths increased. Decreasing for 4 consecutive weeks

(Reuters)-COVID-19 deaths in the US increased by 2% last week to about 7,400, according to a Reuters state and county report, although new cases fell for the fourth straight week.

The country posted 360,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the week leading up to August 16. The United States is the worst outbreak in the world in terms of total cases and deaths, accounting for a quarter of the world’s 21 million cases.

Louisiana led the decline last week, with 44% fewer cases, 41% less in Arkansas and 30% less in South Carolina. Cases in California increased 32%. This states that the state has now cleared due to a test backlog caused by a technical issue.

New cases increased in South Dakota for the fourth straight week. The annual rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, which began on August 7th, attracted over 100,000 motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the country.

With many schools welcoming at least some of their students into the classroom, the United States tests an average of 740,000 a day. The number of COVID-19 tests has declined in recent weeks.

Nationally, the share of all tests positive for the new virus was 7%, down from 8% last week, according to data from the COVID Tracking Project, a volunteer effort to track outbreaks.

Mississippi, Nevada, Florida and Idaho had the highest prevalence rates above 16%.

Only 16 states and Washington, DC reported a positive rate of less than 5%. This is a criterion considered by the World Health Organization as it suggests that there are still many undiscovered communities.
