Three new measles cases in Orange County
Three children from three different Orange County families have been confirmed to develop measles by county health department officials. They are the latest cases in upstate New York. Lisa Rahiff, deputy commissioner of the Orange County Health Department, says that none of the families knew each other, but they all travelled to Belgium, where the outbreak happened last month.
“These aren't cases where one particular child has measles that gave it to another child in Orange County,” she said.
Rahiv says that all affected children are under a year and therefore not old enough to receive the first dose of the vaccine. But they are now recovering well.
Some surrounding counties are beginning to prepare to make sure these cases are ready if they spread.

Dr. Moore says people should know the symptoms – high fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes. After 3-5 days, the rash appears as flat red spots, starting from the face at a hairline and spreading towards the rest of the body.
Sullivan County recently requested that all campers be vaccinated against measles and other illnesses. In the coming months when many in the Orthodox Jewish community spend their summer, the county's population will exceed triple, so it will need to be protected from widespread measles outbreaks.
“So the county goes to all of the different camps and we do an audit and make sure every camper in attendance has medical records and make sure they are on the premises and follow those standards,” Dr. Moore said.
Children are usually vaccinated at 12 months and 5-6 months. For most people, these antibodies are sufficient to protect them from measles for the rest of their lives. However, if blood tests determine that they are no longer protected after being vaccinated as a child, booster shots may be required.
Rahiv says parents with children under 12 months should be cautious for now, especially when it comes to travel.
“You have to go to a family funeral. You have to go to a wedding and take those four months,” she said. “When you're gone or thinking about not going, I want to be very careful about who those four months are exposed.”
Dr. Moore recommends talking to your doctor about getting an early dose of the vaccine if you have to travel with your child between six and 11 months. It can be protected from measles in the short term before the first full dose in 12 months.
