A few students from Ohio Kindergarten who have met this grade
Clevleand – Data obtained from the Ohio Department of Health shows that Ohio kindergarten students are less likely to meet the state's requirements for vaccination.
In Ohio, all students entering kindergarten require that they be vaccinated against dangerous diseases, including measles.
From 2024-25, 85.4% of kindergarten students met all state requirements.
Five years ago, between 2019 and 2020, 89.9% of kindergarten students were fully vaccinated.
Two counties in northeastern Ohio had even lower proportions of fully vaccinated kindergarteners.
In Cuyahoga County, 81.3% of kindergarten students met the state vaccination requirements. In Summity County, it was 82.6%.
State data also show that the proportion of students receiving the MMR vaccine protecting against measles, mumps and rubella has also declined over the past five years.
During the 2019-20 academic year, 92.4% of kindergarten students received the MMR vaccine.
From 2024 to 25, that number fell to 88.3%.
This comes as Ohio fights the outbreak of measles.
As of May 9, there were 36 confirmed cases in Ohio, according to data from the Ohio Department of Health. 16 cases are located in Ashtabula County. 14 are in Knox County. There is one case each in Allen, Butler, Cuyahoga, Rebellion, Holmes and Montgomery counties.
The Cuyahoga County Board of Health issued a public health warning on Thursday about the measles incident.

An unvaccinated child with measles and treated at Hillcrest Hospital urged vigilance.
Health officials said the child was treated at the hospital on May 2 and returned to the emergency room on May 4.
The health board said the child will be treated by a doctor and sent home to isolate “during the period of illness.”
It is recommended that anyone who is in the hospital's atrium lobby and is not considered vaccinated or immunized should stay at home.
The Health Committee issued the following statement:
From 3:50pm to 6:15pm on May 2nd, individuals should note that individuals will be present at Atrium Lobby at Hillcrest Hospital. If you are in the general's atrium lobby area during this period and there is no evidence of measles immunity, it is recommended to stay at home (quarantine). Do not go to work, school, or public places for 21 days to avoid getting infected and giving measles to others.

- Two doses of measles vaccination for at least 12 months
- Immunity to measles from blood tests
- Born on December 31, 1956
