Larimar County, Colorado Expands COVID-19 Testing Capability
Colorado State University and Larimer County are working together to expand the lab’s capacity and speed testing of community-collected COVID-19 specimens.
Tom Gonzalez, Larimar County Health Director, said the goal was to get the test results within two days.
This allows the county to more effectively follow contact with positive cases and inform people that they have been exposed to the coronavirus.
With the introduction of additional staffing and instrumentation, the CSU will be able to double its testing capabilities and handle 800-1,000 tests per day.
According to Gonzalez, the collection of specimens for analysis was not a problem between the Larimer County laboratories and the laboratories operated by the local medical system. However, delays in getting test results often make contact tracking difficult.
Of nearly 4,000 samples taken between July 27 and August 2, test results returned only 27% within two days, he said.

“It’s best for us to do a contact trace within two days, so that’s a concern for us,” he said. “Then our contact tracer will respond within 6 hours.

“But if you’re talking for 4-7 days or more, you’re behind the 8 ball in a sense. I’m struggling to get these close contacts and isolate them immediately to prevent the virus from spreading. I will.”
CSU has two clinical laboratories that can handle the COVID-19 test, said Alan Rudolph, vice president of research. The university has already worked closely with the states and counties to expedite the testing of long-term care facilities.
Additional lab equipment for testing was ordered in March and just arrived. It will take several weeks to complete setup, testing and verification of correctness. According to Rudolf, the CSU is working as quickly as possible to hire qualified personnel to operate the equipment.
He said the cost of expanding the lab would be financed by counties and states. Details of cost sharing are still under consideration.

Gonzalez said he hopes the expanded testing capabilities of the CSU will be available within 6-8 weeks. Improving the testing capacity of the community is important for local schools to enable face-to-face learning.

Rudolf said the CSU would follow the county’s leadership when prioritizing work in the lab.
“In this crisis we support states and counties,” Rudolf said. “We are already proactive in supporting that, and we know it is very important for the school to open, so we are working as quickly as possible.
According to Gonzalez, state health officials are working on establishing a network of laboratories across the state that can report test results within 2-3 days.
“It’s a game changer that allows us to track contacts, really control the virus, and reduce the overall infection rate in Colorado,” he said. “That is a big deal.”
