Cuyahoga County reviews the first measles case of 2025 and encourages vaccinations
The Cuyahoga County Board of Health announced on May 8 that the first case of measles in Cuyahoga County was reported when a child was tested positive at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights.
The Health Committee is urging residents to protect themselves by getting the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
The vaccine “provides long-term immunity,” said Takisha Fuller, assistant director of epidemiology, surveillance and informatics at the board. “The vaccine is about 97% effective at preventing measles, so we advise the community to stay current and current with the vaccine.”
She recommended that people who were not vaccinated or who were vaccinated before 1968 had spoken to doctors about getting shots. Minimal side effects may include arm pain, redness, and swelling.
Getting vaccinated can prevent the disease from spreading to people who are prone to complications, such as pregnant women and women with weakened immune systems.
“Some of these complications are serious and mean brain inflammation, such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and in rare cases death,” Fuller said.
Ohio has recently had two measles outbreaks, urging doctors and medical professionals to raise awareness about the virus and the MMR vaccine.
Residents can talk to a doctor or take blood tests to determine their immunization status to check their vaccination status.
According to the Health Committee, people are considered immunity.

In Cuyahoga County Lower MMR vaccination rates 86.4% of local kindergarteners are more likely to be compared to the state average of 88.3% for the 2024-25 grades.
