The Bay Area has a long allergy season and is getting stronger this year. Experts explain why

San Jose, California (KGO) – Allergists say this season has been longer and worse than previously noticed, and more people are suffering from the consequences.

From hikers and bikers to ham radio enthusiasts, everyone talks about allergies.

“We were just sitting here and said we had forgotten to take allergy medication this morning. Due to all the grass and wind, I can feel it in my eyes.”

“I took Flonase this morning and told me my nose would be clear at least right now,” said San Jose resident Jim Carlson.

The more people go out to enjoy beautiful spring weather throughout the Bay Area, the more people suffer from the consequences.

Oak and pine tree pollen, and grass allergens are the most common this spring…and they are causing problems riding San Jose resident Eric Cole, especially on the bike.

“Well, you have to get it,” Cole said. “I can't get coups during, but it sometimes makes it less enjoyable. Last time I hardly took allergy medication. Maybe you can hear it. I'm all busy. Extreme here.”

Tina Cinder, clinical associate professor of allergy and immunology at Stanford University, agrees.

Not only does she say that allergy symptoms are more evident in younger and younger children, but she also changes how long the warmer climate is and how long people suffer from allergies.

“The pollen season is being extended,” says Sindher. “So it's like a period of time when these plants pollinate. And the pollen load has increased, so I feel like I can see the symptoms getting worse now.”

Sindher says how you deal with allergies depends on how much it affects your quality of life.
