Significantly improved turnaround time for covid-19 testing in Wales
Health Minister Vaughan Jessing has announced about £32m to reduce the resulting turnaround time.
This investment will result in faster contact tracking results and be prepared in case Wales increases during the fall and winter.
Funds will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to pay for additional staff and facilities at the Public Health Wales Regional Institute based at University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff, Morriston Hospital, Swansea, and Isby Tea Gran Cludrill. can do.

Gething said: “This investment secures the Welsh laboratory’s ability to manage coronaviruses and implement testing, tracing, and protection strategies to prepare for the winter.
“We don’t want to use all the test capabilities this investment brings, but we need to be prepared.
“Science tells us that the virus will spread faster in colder, damp months, so we can expect an increase in spread later this year.
This investment improves resilience and ensures that the test and contact tracking system is robust enough to handle the coming of winter.
“We all want to return to normal life and relax restrictions as much as possible.
“Our testing, tracing, and protection strategies help us achieve that by quickly identifying people with symptoms of coronavirus, identifying new hotspots, and separating as many contacts as possible. Is the key.”
Dr. Tracy Cooper, Chief of Public Health Wales, said: “This investment allows us to make some fundamental changes to our lab services, which will significantly improve our capabilities and resilience both in the current pandemic situation and in the long run.

Staffing and initial costs for new equipment are expected to be around £8m and testing costs are expected to vary between £8m and £24m depending on demand.
