Influenza and pneumonia are currently killing six times as many people as the worst dead coronavirus since lockdown
The new numbers show that FLU kills more people in the UK than coronaviruses for eight consecutive weeks.
According to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the number of people killed by influenza and pneumonia is about seven times higher than Covid-19.

In the eight weeks leading up to August 7, the latest date for which statistics are available, 3,144 died of coronavirus, but 7,639 died of influenza or pneumonia.
Eight weeks ago, by June 19, a total of 1,002 people had died of the flu-compared to 783 deaths in Covid-19.

This is because coronavirus deaths in England and Wales have fallen to the lowest levels since lockdown began.
Of the deaths registered in the week leading up to August 7, 152 stated in their death certificate “new coronavirus (COVID-19)”.
This is the lowest number of deaths associated with Covid-19 over the past 20 weeks, a decrease of 21.2% compared to the previous week.
‘Below average’
The latest figures consist of eight consecutive weeks with fewer than expected deaths.
Influenza deaths were also well below the five-year average, indicating a steady decrease in coronavirus deaths.
The reason for the reduction in flu deaths is not yet known, but is believed to be the result of increased hand washing and wearing masks.
All registered deaths in England and Wales were 1.7% lower (157 deaths) than the five-year average for the week through August 7.
According to ONS, six regions in England were below the five-year marker.
They were Southeast England (0.2% or less), West Midlands (0.6% or less), Southwest England (4.4% or less), East England (4.5% or less), London (4.5% or less), Yorkshire & Humber. (5.4% or less).
In Wales, the number of registered deaths during the week through August 7 was 1.4% below the five-year average.
Mortality in nursing homes and hospitals remained below the five-year average for the week through August 7, but individual home deaths were above the five-year average (702+).

Figures released by ONS on Tuesday show that 51,935 deaths related to Covid-19 occurred in England and Wales by August 7 and were registered by August 15.
According to the Northern Ireland Bureau of Statistics, national records in Scotland registered 4,213 deaths associated with Covid-19 in Scovid by August 9, and 859 deaths by August 7.
Taken together, 57,007 deaths have been registered so far in the UK, including suspicious cases, where Covid-19 is listed on the death certificate.
This total is much higher than the official numbers reported by Public Health England (PHE) every day due to the way statistics are recorded.
Yesterday, PHE confirmed three more coronavirus deaths in the UK and increased official government tally to 41,369.
This is the result of an urgent government review of how the statistics were counted, resulting in only deaths within 28 days of recording a positive test result.
