Young Mental Health Issues Minority Worse During COVID-19, New Survey Shows | News
Portland, or (KPTV)-CDC survey results show that one in four 18- to 24-year-olds seriously consider suicide to combat COVID-19-related stress Is shown.
In the CDC report, they say young adults, minorities, and essential workers are experiencing overly worsening mental health problems. The report also shows that in the month prior to participating in the study, 25.2% of 18-24 year olds who responded seriously considered suicide.
Lines For Life, a social services organization in Portland, said the number of hotline calls has recently increased. CEO David Westbrook says the statistics are not surprising. He says there are other ways people can deal with this unprecedented time. He says it can start with something as simple as putting your phone at bedtime.
“There are two things we can do: We can keep a sleep schedule for seven days. We can’t get a smartphone for an hour before bed,” said Westbrook. “Connectivity is a very important but difficult task during this time. But figuring out how to connect with loved ones, friends, and those who can be there for emotional support.”
The CDC report also shows that people have begun or increased the use of substances to combat COVID-related stress. Westbrook suggests removing substances from homes as one way to avoid developing unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Above all, Westbrook says he feels stress and depression in a perfectly normal state during stressful times.
