Israel reports 8th measles death this year

Israel's Ministry of Health on Sunday reported another measles death in the country.

A 2.5-year-old child who was not vaccinated against measles died from measles. This is the eighth death from measles since the outbreak began. All children are healthy children with no underlying health conditions and have not received measles vaccinations.

Additionally, a 6-1/2-year-old child from the southern part of the country has not been vaccinated against measles and is on a ventilator due to measles.

The Ministry of Health has reiterated that measles is a preventable disease with an effective and safe vaccine.

In endemic areas, it is recommended that all children be vaccinated at the ages of 1 and 6 years (as part of the routine vaccination program).

Start the second vaccination by the age of 18 months.

Booster vaccination is recommended for infants aged 6 to 11 months in endemic areas and when traveling to endemic areas.

Areas currently defined as having an outbreak: Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh, Bnei Brak, Harish, Modi'in Illit, Nof Hagalil, Kiryat Ghat, Ashdod, Safad, Netivot, and Mate Binyamin Regional Council.

Since the beginning of the year, 1,778 measles cases have been recorded, with 574 people hospitalized. Of the 1,778 total cases, 91 percent or 1,622 cases were in children 9 years of age or younger, with the majority of cases being children 1 to 4 years of age.

Since September, vaccinations have increased by 500% in Jerusalem and by an additional 630% in Beit Shemesh (year-on-year), following the ministry's efforts to expand vaccination coverage, the ministry said.
