Israel reports mosquito infected with West Nile virus
The Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection has confirmed that some mosquitoes in the country carry the West Nile virus. These are the first cases in Israel this year.
Local health officials have also warned people with coronaviruses to take special precautions to prevent mosquito bites. Currently, there is no cure for West Nile fever. “Preventing mosquito bites is the main way to break the cycle of human transmission,” said the Department of Environmental Protection.
West Nile virus is transmitted via Culex Pipiens and Culex Perexiguus mosquitoes native to Europe. These species of house mosquitoes can also carry other diseases such as western equine encephalitis and St. Louis encephalitis. Mosquitoes can also carry malaria and worms in birds that infect dogs.
West Nile Fever
West Nile fever has mild flu-like symptoms, such as fever, can last for 3 to 6 days, and is associated with headaches, pain, and sometimes nausea. Although it can cause meningitis or encephalitis in complex cases, the disease is usually not fatal.
In Israel, infected mosquitoes are usually found between August and October. Mosquitoes that carry the disease are also most active during the warmer days.
Two years ago, it was reported that three people were killed in connection with West Nile fever. In 2019, there were 32 cases in 27 regions of the country. Some animals were infected as the Ministry of Health detected infected mosquitoes in 34 different locations.
Professor Schlomit Paz of Haifa University believes that increased cases of West Nile fever are due to climate change. More and more mosquitoes are heading north from Africa, where mosquito activity is widespread.

Researchers at Tel Aviv University also investigated the impact of current greenhouse gas emissions on the life cycle of mosquitoes. West Nile virus and coronavirus
On the other hand, the Ministry of Environmental Protection is particularly concerned about the possible complications of the current outbreak of coronaviruses. “Patients living in areas where infected mosquitoes are found should pay particular attention to the potential for West Nile fever,” the minister said. “This is a reminder that the West Nile virus hasn’t disappeared, even during the epidemic of COVID-19,” said American epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers.
To date, Israel has recorded more than 97,000 Covid-19 and 780 deaths. By July, the country faced a second wave after it suspected that the pandemic had subsided with less than 2,000 cases. Collective protests and other activities have dramatically increased the number of incidents by August.
Reducing exposure to infected mosquitoes includes removing water from trash, potted plants, containers, swimming pools, gutters, fish ponds, and other water collecting areas. The ministry also recommends wearing protective clothing, indoor mosquito nets and insect repellents.
