Lockdown rules tighten in Northern Ireland after case rise

People in Northern Ireland face more stringent lockdown rules after the R-number for coronavirus infections rose to 1.3.

The number of indoor conferences in a household is reduced to 6 from 2 households or less.

The number of people for outdoor gatherings will be reduced from 30 to 15 starting next week.

Health Minister Robin Swan said: “It would be too late to stop the virus from spreading further unless we take action now.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael McBride upheld the Stormont Executive decision.

“I think they will signal the entire community,” he said.

“They reflect all our concerns in the growing Covid-19 case.”

Another 51 people in Northern Ireland tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, according to the Department of Health.

As long as the risk assessment is conducted and the necessary measures are taken, there will be more than 15 participants in a particular event.

“This includes weddings, church worship, sports events, and strict adherence to social distances and hygiene continues to apply,” Stormont executives said in a statement.

Executives have also agreed on some caps for rallies and events that can be quickly introduced in response to the transmission of the disease.
