Coronavirus: New N95 Mask, Study Show Has a Viable Alternative
According to a new study, sterile and expired N95 respirators provide healthcare professionals with effective protection against coronavirus infections.
N95 respirators are more than 11 years old, and used N95 respirators treated with ethylene oxide or vaporized hydrogen peroxide maintain filtration efficiency. New research is showing.
The limited supply of personal protective equipment has been one of the most difficult challenges for US healthcare organizations during the early stages of a coronavirus pandemic. The lack of N95 respirators, which filter at least 95% of 0.3 μm particles and are the gold standard of protection against airborne pathogens, was particularly troublesome for health care workers and their employers.
New research published by JAMA Internal MedicineThe 29 installed face masks were tested for installed filtration efficiency (FFE). The attached face masks included the N95 mask, surgical mask with tie, surgical mask with ear loops.
The FFE test was conducted from April to June in a custom-made exposure chamber at the US Environmental Protection Agency Human Research Facility in Chapel Hill, NC. Three used sterilization methods were tested on used N95 respirators: ethylene oxide, steam and vaporized hydrogen peroxide.
The study made some important discoveries.
- N95 masks retain 95% or more FFE even after 11 years of expiration
- N95 mask treated with ethylene oxide or vaporized hydrogen peroxide retains over 95% FFE
- Steam sterilization deformed the 1860 N95 mask, making it unsuitable for reuse
- Steam sterilization of the 1870+ Aura face mask was effective and the mask retained more than 95% FFE after one sterilization cycle
- Chinese made KN95 mask did not achieve 95% FFE: Jiahu Kang KN95 mask with earloop posted 85.1% FFE, Guangdong Fei fan KN95 posted 53.2% FFE.
- The N95 mask, which was an inappropriate size for study participants, still had significant protection, with FFE results of 90% to 95%.
- The average FFE score for a surgical mask with a tie was 71.5%
- The procedural mask with earloop had the lowest average FFE score of 38.1%.
Interpretation of results
The new study co-authors found that the new N95 mask was not the only valid option for covering the face for clinicians who treat patients with 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
“This quality improvement study, which evaluates 29 alternative face masks used by clinicians who interact with patients during a COVID-19 outbreak, has shown that expired N95 masks and sterile We found that we could use a used N95 mask from. It’s less effective filtration,” they wrote.
Sterilization with ethylene oxide (EtO), written by the co-author, has one drawback. “A potential drawback of EtO sterilization is that the wearer may be exposed to residual EtO in the face mask.”

The amount of virus required to cause a surgical mask clinical infection, even if it is a significant cause of permeation, remains unknown, so masks with low filtration efficiency for submicron particles, if not all virus particles. In most cases blocking may prevent the disease.”
