100 Ebola outbreaks in western Congo
Democratic Republic of the Congo (Reuters)-The Ebola outbreak in the western part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has infected 100 people and killed 43 of them by Friday, the World Health Organization said.
The latest outbreak was declared on June 1 in Mbandaka, a city of 1 million people along the Congo River, shortly before Congo declared the end of the last two-year eastern outbreak. ..
In a statement, the WHO said it spreads to a distant village in the province of Equatur, which spreads to over 300 km of dense forest with few roads. The rate of spread of the virus is relatively constant, with case data showing.
“The virus spreads over vast and rugged terrain and requires costly intervention,” said Matoshidiso Moeti, WHO Head of Africa.
Similar to previous outbreaks, WHO is implementing a ring-type vaccination strategy, where contacts of infected individuals have been vaccinated, reaching more than 22,600 to date.
In late June, Congo celebrated the end of an outbreak of genetically distinct Ebola, which killed more than 2,200 people in two years.
Despite effective vaccines and treatments that dramatically improve survival, the response was hampered by the fact that they had to work in an area controlled by an armed group.
Last week, Mbandaka medical personnel went on strike, protesting unpaid salaries and low wages for three days, blocking access to the laboratory. The strike ended on Monday when the government agreed to investigate their claims.
The Equatorial Forest of Congo is a natural reservoir for the Ebola virus, found near the Ebola River in 1976 and causing severe vomiting and diarrhea.
