Governor puts Jackson County on Coronavirus’watchlist’ and removes Marion and Wasco Coronavirus
Salem — Oregon Governor Kate Brown modified her list of counties struggling to contain the coronavirus on Thursday, August 20th. It identified Jackson as a new hotspot, but seems to have made good progress with Marion and Wasco.
Brown added Jackson County to the so-called “watch list.” It serves as a precursor to more aggressive actions, such as regaining business restrictions and home instruction. She removed Wasco and Marion counties that had been listed since July 3 and July 30.
“I would like to commend Marion and Wasco county county officials and community members for their efforts to reduce the prevalence of COVID-19 in the community,” Mr Brown said in a statement. “This is another example of how we can work together to combat this disease.”
Brown’s watch list has eight counties, and the results have been mixed since its establishment in early July. This designation is to reserve state resources in the blockbuster county. Some local authorities say it works well, others say they don’t yet have what they need.
If public health authorities cannot frequently correlate confirmed or suspected coronavirus infections with identified sources, Brown puts the county on a watch list. The state benchmark for such sporadic spread is 50 cases per 100,000 people.
It’s not immediately obvious which counties and how those metrics worked, including those removed from the watch list. That’s because Brown’s office didn’t cite her published statistics, and the Oregon Department of Health, the state’s public health department, doesn’t list those numbers online in many datasets.
An agency spokesman said he would provide information to the Oregonian/Oregon live as soon as possible.
Jackson counties, including Medford in southern Oregon, have seen a steady increase in confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus this month. According to state data, the Oregon Department of Health reported 352 cases as of August 1, compared to 636 on Thursday.
Published data indicate that Marion County continues to fight coronavirus cases. Data from last week showed that 10.9% of people tested for the virus were positive. This is the highest level in Marion County since at least June and is twice the state’s rate last week.
According to state data, authorities were unable to trace one-third of Marion County cases to known sources last week, the highest rate since May.
Being on Brown’s watch list ensures at least 3 weeks of active monitoring and new limiting threats. Brown had already returned Morrow, Malfua, and Umatilla counties to the first phase of resumption, and Umatilla was originally sent home.
The county’s complete list of watch lists also includes Baker, Hood River, Jefferson, and Multnomah.
