Tireia Harrell of Albany is a colon cancer survivor and advocate for early screening tests to reduce cancer risk.
Harrell underwent a delayed colonoscopy and was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in October 2024. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy, completed treatment in June 2025, and now has a clean scan.
Dr. Thomas Tritt, a colorectal surgeon with Capital District Colon & Rectal Surgery Associates, emphasized that colonoscopies are the only medical tool that can actually prevent cancer. He said: “This is a very safe surgery with few complications and there is no need to be afraid.”
Colorectal cancer is the leading cause of death for people under age 50 in the United States. Harrell was 46 years old when she was diagnosed.
Dr. Tritt explained that African Americans have the highest incidence of colorectal cancer in the United States and are the third leading cause of cancer death among black men and women.
Factors include late diagnosis and systemic disorders.
Dr. Tritt said risk factors start at 40 if you have a personal or family history.
He added that prevention is important because most patients have no symptoms.
