Michigan Department of Health and Human Services urges people to protect themselves from measles
MARKETS, Mich. (WLUC) – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is reminding the public to protect themselves from measles after several measles outbreaks have been reported in the state.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that can spread rapidly. Measles can spread before an infected person develops symptoms. The virus itself can survive in the air for two hours, so you don’t need to be directly in the airspace to be infected.
Symptoms of measles include itchy eyes, fever, and a noticeable rash. It usually takes a few days for symptoms to appear.
Bureau of Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Director Joe Coyle says the best way to protect yourself from measles is to get vaccinated. Coyle said Michigan is actively working to stop the spread of measles and is studying how other states have responded to measles outbreaks.
“We’re certainly not the first state in the country to see an increase in measles cases, and I think we’ve learned a lot from what some of the other states in particular have gone through and we’re going to apply some of the lessons that we’ve learned here in Michigan,” Coyle said.
Coyle said measles is extremely dangerous for young children. If young children have been vaccinated, they may have some immunity from their mother. Professor Coyle recommends that children aged 12 months should be vaccinated as soon as possible.
